UCAS code C800 (3 years) -
Module Options 2007-2008 The course provides you with the best education in the breadth and depth of psychology. One of its distinctive qualities is that the lecturers involved are all active in
research - they are engaged in pushing forward the frontiers of knowledge.

It is not just about filling you with the prevailing theories and facts of Psychology. It also gives you the skills you need to find out things for yourself, to discover to evaluate, to question and to criticise the established facts, how to follow the subject as it develops in the years to come. These skills are important for your future
career development - whatever you choose.
You also learn how to use your own research to contribute to the development of the exciting area of psychology.
Stage OneThe first year consists of a number of modules which set out the foundations of psychology and the associated life sciences. They are mostly worth 10 credits, last one semester, and are assessed by multiple choice examinations at the end of the semester. The emphasis is on giving you a breadth of knowledge of the basic issues and topics in psychology and related areas of biology. These courses mostly draw on a common textbook, though additional reading is also provided.
You also study Statistics and Methods in Psychology. These are skills based courses, rather than content based. They start to train you in the skills essential to carrying out psychological research; running experiments, analysing and interpreting data, writing up research reports. You will continue to practise these skills in the second year, and in the third year, you will carry out a piece of research of your own.
Research Participation Scheme - in the first year you also participate in a certain number of
psychology experiments being carried out by staff and other students.
Stage Two In the second year, we explore the core areas of psychology in greater depth, and train you more explicitly in writing and critical evaluation of psychological material. All stage two courses are compulsory, as the material they cover is essential for anyone who wants to go on to practice or teach psychology. The content modules are assessed by a mixture of written coursework and written exams. At stage two, you should expect to be reading original research articles as well as textbooks. We will help you develop your skills in searching the literature and reading scientific pa-pers critically.
Research Participation Scheme - in the second year you also participate in a certain number of
psychology experiments being carried out by staff and other students.
Stage ThreeIn the third year, students choose several specialist modules from a list of options. These modules go into particular areas of psychology in greater depth than is possible in earlier years. Students need to select options up to a value of 80 credits from a choice of 20-credit modules which run over both semesters and 10-credit modules which run in one semester. These modules are typically assessed by written exams, with some of the longer modules also including in-course assignments. An exception is the Extended Essay, which may be taken in semester 1 or 2, and which is assessed by means of a 6000-word essay in a chosen area of the psychology research literature. Students may also choose to take up to 20 of their credits from courses offered outside
Psychology.
A major element of Stage 3 is the Project, in which students devise, carry out and write up their own piece of original research. This is one of the most exciting and challenging parts of a psychology degree. Students are allocated to a supervisor from amongst the staff.
